Mambo
The
Mambo originated from Cuba, where settlements from Haitians, brought back
from Haiti the Mambo is a voodoo priestess, who for the villagers
counsels, heals, exorcist, advisor and entertainment althought no dance
in Haiti is called mambo.
The
mixture of cuban music and swing music created this new dance sensation,
the mambo credited popularity to Perez Prado who introduced it at the
Tropicana in Havana in 1943.
The
Mambo was originally played as any rumba with a riff ending with the
riff of a rumba break on 2 and 4 in 4/4 time.
It
first appeared in north america in 1947 at the palladium, china doll,
Havana Madrid and Birdland. A modified Mambo version was introduced
because the original version had to be toned down because of violent
gesterres. It was presented in dance schools and night-clubs with a
great success and dancers became known as “mambonicks”.
The
Mambo has revived in present times, due to the number of films featuring
dancing and a man Eddie Torres a dance pro, and mambo fanatic becoming a
leader in the style as well as building a reputation as a
dancer/teacher, he is known as the “MAMBO KING”.
The
Mambo was reintroduced to dancers in night-club style mambo dancing in
the 1990’s and is well know as Salsa.
The
Mambo also gets it’s influences from African, Jazz, Cuban, Hip-hop,
making for certain you never Run out of steps.
Most peaple think the Mambo is a fast dance but in essence is a slow
romantic dance that doesn’t move very much. |
